Onion is a vegetable that comes from the ground; it can be grown in fields, or home gardens indoors and out. They come in a variety of types: onion, shallots, leeks, pearl and scallions to name a few, and a variety of colors: red, yellow, green, and white. This vegetable can have a sweet, mild or pungent taste and smell (will cause the eyes to tear), the more pungent the onion the better the health benefits; they are also used in many cuisines around the world.

Onion contains a high content, and is therefore a good source of,sulfuric compounds, chromium, vitamin C, B6 and is rich in flavanoids. The benefits of these nutrients for your health are that it can prevent a number of health conditions such as: chromium, improves cell response to insulin and as a result improves tolerance for glucos in diabetics. The sulfuric compounds, chromium, and vitamin B6 together lower blood pressure, prevent atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), which reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack. The nutrients in onion aids in lowering cholesterol levels in the blood and elevating HDL (good) cholesterol, When regularly included in diet, it can reduce colon cancer risks; added to meat, it can lower the amount of toxin produced when cooking at high temperatures. This vegetable aids in the maintenance of healthy bones, reduces inflammation, and in conjunction with other flavonoids, kill bacteria.

Onion are used to make medicine which aid in the treatment of digestion problems: loss of appitite, upset stomach, gall bladder disorders. Other medical values include heart and blood vessel problems which include chest pain (angina), high blood pressure, atheroscleorosis (hardening of the arteries) sore mouth and throat, whooping cough, bronchitis, asthma, dehydration and diabetes.

Beauty Benefits of Onions
As a beauty aid, the contents in onion are good for the skin. It can be applied directly in cases of insect bites, wounds, light burns, boils, bruises, and warts. It's Anti microbial properties also works on the skin by preventing acne scarring; an extract is useful for treating surgery scars.

For the Hair, an onion hair mask can be made that will restore the hairs ability for regrowth; hair loss is reduced or stopped, dandruff is reduced and it gives a shiney glossy look to hair.

Home Made Onion Mask Recipe:
1. Grate grind or mash onion.
2. Strain through a grinder to get the juice,
3. Mix the juice with equal parts of olive oil or coconut oil.
4. Apply mixture to scalp slowly.
5. Apply remains over hair.
6. Cover the head wth a shower cap ad leave on for two hours; rinse away the mixture and shampoo.
 (may have to shampoo twice to rid hair of stickiness). *Use two times a month for best results.

Storing Onions: For best results, they should stored at room temperature, in a dark space alone to prevent decay. When cut, store in a plastic bag and eat within 2 days (loose nutrients fast due to oxidation); store in a non metal container in the fridge.
