Blackbox Cosmetics

Photo: From time to time you may have someone ask you if our products are "all natural". Below is good information for you to know and keep on hand:

Not all the ingredients are natural. There are some ingredients such as Retinol, that can’t be natural or organic. They are not botanicals. The first goal of BlackBox Cosmetics is to create a product that is effective. The second goal is to have a product that does the least amount of damage while accomplishing goal number 1. While it would be ideal to have a product that is 100% natural and organic, the fact is that those products don’t effect the skin significantly. There are many lines like that available, but they do not have a significant impact on wrinkles or the appearance of skin. Our products are effective and free of harsh chemicals, sulfates and parabens. Our products are also effective at reducing the appearance of fine lines as well as improving skin conditions associated with aging and problem skin.

Retinol is not considered natural because it is a vitamin derivative, not a solid separate vitamin, and is not found in nature without processing. To be 100% natural you must have 100% natural, found in nature ingredients. While our ingredients come from botanicals and vitamins and minerals, some require processing. Because we used processed ingredients, we do not label ourselves as 100% natural.

All cosmetics products sold in the US must also use preservatives approved by the FDA, there are currently 3 approved by the FDA, none of which are natural. Even your “organic” and 100% natural products must by law use one of the 3 approved by the FDA. These products are not natural either. Instead of falsely advertising our products as 100% natural or 100% organic as other companies do, we use full disclosure with advertising and listing our ingredients.

So while we do not label ourselves 100% natural or 100% organic, we use organic ingredients when they can be obtained organically and we use the smallest amount of preservatives, are paraben and sulfate free, as we can and substantiate with natural preservatives as well. In addition, we also use ingredients that cannot be organic because we want a product that actually provides positive changes in the skin. Merely plants and botanicals will not do anything but add moisture and while that may prevent some skin issues, it will have no impact on current wrinkles or pigmentation.

Out goal is not to be 100% natural but to positively effect the skins condition while removing signs of aging and doing the least amount of harm to the body therefore we do not use TOXIC ingredients, even though some may not be 100% natural they are the lowest on the cosmetics database of toxicity. Retinol is the only ingredient that does not fit this mold and the entire reason it does not, that it causes the skin cells to turn over faster and exfoliate faster than normal, is the reason it is used in the cosmetics industry. This is the reason I use Retinol as an example because it is the highest level we use. It is also the #1 ingredient recommended by dermatologists for improving the condition of the skin for the most reasons, acne, wrinkles, texture, tone, and pigmentation. Without it, you can hardly have a product that a dermatologist would recommend.
